Etsy Interview with Dorkorama Jewelry
First off, tell me a little bit about yourself. Well, Im David Savage, Maker of Things/Head Dork of Dorkorama Jewelry. I grew up next to the ocean on Campobello Island, New Brunswick ,Canada and in Lubec ,Maine and miss them both a lot, but was not born to be a fisherman, or to live in a small town. Boo Radley, and Ms. Mia Jem. I went to college forever, learned a lot of neat things but never got a degree. I adore coffee, punk rock, crossword puzzles, sweaters, pop art, Glee, traveling, the ocean, and pictures of chimpanzees.
How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?
I have made jewelry my whole life really; I used to spend my allowance at the little local craft shop, and sold a few things in the tourist y gift shops when I was like 12 and 13. I did it on and off forever, picking up little skills along the way, and got super into it again about a year and a half ago. I was lucky enough to come into a nice little chunk of money, and bought every craft supply I ever dreamed of owning, and set out to figure how to make myself self employed as an artist or crafter. Not there yet but a lot closer than I was!
When and how did you originally find Etsy?
My friend Jannine showed it to me 3 or 4 years ago, we would sit, and click around for hours, ooohing and ahhing and lamenting the fact that we didnt make and sell rad things too. I joined as a buyer in April of 2009, and opened Dorkorama in October of 2009.
What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?
The amount of talent and inspiration on etsy is amazing! I am totally knocked down humbled by the talent out there. It makes me feel like a silly dog and pony show, but makes me want to learn more, make more, and make better. I also love the high standard of quality and customer service that has kind of grown organically by the sellers delivering that consistently. It makes me try harder with my work, I have high standards to live up to.
What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?
I am always inspired by materials, a beautiful gemstone or glass, or a vintage salvaged doo dad. I lived by the ocean until I was 20 and miss it constantly, and that colors so much of what I make. Im also inspired by books and music. I have pieces named after songs an d novels. And anything kind of off beat, or different. They were kind of a showcase of a few new skills I have mastered, and I think they came out beautifully.
What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?
I want to provide people with something to treasure. I love selling at fairs and stuff because you see people try something on and fall in love with it, its great. And I hope that I am doing the same at Dorkorama. I try to have something unique or exceptional in each piece I create!
Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?
I am constantly working on new things, whether its a batch of image pendants, or wrapping stones and glass, resin casting, or steampunk assemblage. I hope to in the future combine all these elements into one cohesive collection that is distinctly Dorkorama.
Where can readers find out about more information regarding your jewelry and other creations and possible special offers including additional websites, blogs, facebook, etc?
Well I have a facebook fanpage where I post a lot of new photos and do giveaways and such
